Digital Blue Light
Many of us spend most of our working hours in front of a computer which can often result in eye fatigue after staring at the screen all day. What also is concerning is the specific wavelength of light that is emitted from computer, tablet and cell phone screens. This high energy visible (HEV) light is so small and fast that it penetrates past many of our eye’s natural defenses, and hits our macula at the speed of light. It is what makes computer screens seem so bright and easy to read. The common term for HEV light is “Blue Light”. It gets it’s name from the light spectrum, where the color blue is the color produced by the concentrated wavelengths. This is the same reason the sky is blue.
The Paris Vision Institute, Harvard University, and other esteemed groups have concluded that the increased risk of macular degeneration (AMD) is in direct correlation to the amount of blue light exposure we receive. Studies also indicate that excessive exposure to harmful blue light after sunset disrupts the body’s natural circadian rhythms and melatonin production. In other words, the ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and achieve natural deep rejuvenative sleep is drastically reduced as we stare at our computer and phone screens late into the night.
In addition, studies conducted in Europe draw conclusions that nighttime exposure of HEV light disrupts your body’s natural production of melatonin. This naturally occurring chemical in your body is triggered when the sun goes down in order to make you tired and facilitate deep REM sleep. There is a strong feeling among leading scientists that modern society is not getting enough restorative sleep due to a melatonin cycle impairment that comes from extended computer usage.
There is also a new phenomenon in the last decade known as digital eye strain. Sometimes called computer vision syndrome, it is characterized by dull aches and ocular pain.
